What a birth doula actually does

Your doctor or midwife is focused on your baby arriving safely. Your nurse is monitoring vitals and managing the medical side of things. A birth doula is the person in the room whose entire focus is on you – how you're feeling, what you need, and making sure you never feel like things are moving faster than you can process.

In the room that looks like helping you breathe through contractions, finding positions that ease the pain, talking you through tough moments, keeping your partner involved and informed, and being the person who already knows what you need before you have to figure out how to ask for it mid-contraction.

What Makes Empowered Paths Birth Doula Support Different

When you hire Empowered Paths, you're not getting a stranger at your birth. By the time labor starts, the person beside you already knows how you handle pressure, what calms you down, what your partner needs, and what you looks like when you're saying you're fine but you're feeling unsure.

I got into this work because of my own births. I made it to 8 centimeters with my second baby and my body was handling it, but without the right support in the room my mind gave out before my body did. That moment shaped everything about how I show up for the families I work with now.

What Empowered Paths Care feels like

"I don't know what I would have done without Rejeanna. I was planning a homebirth and towards the end of pregnancy I have to switch to the hospital for an induction. I was nervous about the induction but Rejeanna helped me work through that. I was really hoping to labor naturally and knew that could be hard with an induction. Rejeanna was able to help me achieve my goal of going through birth without pain medication and for that I am very thankful!"

Have Questions?

  • Yes. Empowered Paths accepts several insurance plans for birth doula services in the Central Valley including Kaiser, Health Plan of San Joaquin, Health Net, Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal, and California Medi-Cal. If you're not sure whether your plan covers doula care, reach out and I'll help you figure it out.

  • Your midwife or OB handles the medical side of your birth – monitoring baby, managing complications, delivering your baby safely. I'm here for you. Your comfort, your questions, your headspace, your partner's nerves. We work alongside your medical team, never against them. Think of it like this: your provider takes care of the birth, I take care of you.

  • Yes. Doula support isn't just for unmedicated births. No matter how your baby arrives, there are still hours of labor beforehand, decisions to navigate, and a whole postpartum experience on the other side. Some of the most meaningful support I've provided has been during epidural and cesarean births.

  • Never! Your partner is one of the most important people in that room and I make sure he doesn't feel sidelined or helpless. I help him understand what's happening at each stage, give him a role that's actually useful, and make sure someone is checking on him too because nobody ever does.

  • Most of my families reach out in the second trimester, which gives us enough time to build a real relationship before your birth. But I've worked with moms who reached out at 36 weeks and moms who called before their first OB appointment. There's no wrong time. The earlier we connect, the more prepared you'll feel.

  • That's exactly where most of my families start. You don't have to be sold on the idea before reaching out. Book a free consultation and we'll just talk about where you are, what's on your mind, and whether this feels like the right fit. There's never any pressure.

  • In the vast majority of births, I'm the one by your side – that's a big part of choosing Empowered Paths! But life is unpredictable, and you deserve to know you're covered no matter what. I'm connected to a community of doulas I would personally trust for my own births, and in the rare event I can't be there, one of them will step in fully prepared and up to speed on your birth preferences, your story, and what you need. You will never be left without support.
